Lightning Research

QFS has executed a number of research projects related to the atmospheric phenomenon of lightning. We have worked in ground-based lightning strike detection and localization, identification of continuing current lightning strikes, measurement of electric charge buildup prior to strikes, and development of optimized sensors to provide to researchers. In addition, we instrumented a Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle with E-field sensors and successfully flew it near thunderstorms with the goal of using the system to study lightning related charge processes in storms.
